I hear that because the digital camera video drums run at such a high RPM rate, that they can be LOUDDDD!!!

    Super-8 has company afterall.

    Unhappy

The onboard mikes use to be ok on the Sony's. For years I had a 1995 Sony model (I forget which) and the sound was pretty darn good as long as you used a tripod, didn't touch the camera or walk around behind it (grass is ok to walk on). It would pick up some motor noise but it was always minor. The auto gain was excellent for my purposes. Then I decided to upgrade in 2000 to a Digital 8 (DCR TR-7000), man what a piece of sh*t that camera was The picture quality was slightly better than the older Hi8 but the microphones were absolutely 100 freakin percent garbage. It's obvious that Sony puts in cheaper and cheaper mics every year. The sound was AWFUL and the auto gain sucked big melon pies too Plus the digital camera was louder. I ebayed that heaping lump of a camera and bought a 1995 TR-100 and am happy again.

Ok gotta go my blood pressures to high

NEVER buy a digital camera without turning it on in a quiet environment and LISTENING to how loud the camera sounds when the video drum is spinning. Make sure you put tape in the camera.

The oldest trick in the book would be for the salesperson to hook the digital camera up to a televison monitor and conveniently forget to put a tape in the digital camera so you can listen to how the loud the camera is when it is recording.

And the latest "trend" is to not supply an external microphone input to the camera, you can only use the onboard microphone...sheesh!

This is especially true of the one chip digital cameras.

Just thought I'd kick this back to the top of the forum.
